- “I was cornering with more confidence and speed than I ever have before. I now understand how to use my body to manipulate the bike properly. This is not something that, in my opinion, any video on YouTube can teach you. We covered lots of fundamental skills and I feel that it was really good value.” Dave, February 2017
- “Matt the instructor is a great coach and gave loads of useful and practical advice throughout the day, from bike setup to drills, in a relaxed and supportive environment. Matt’s approach is very interactive and really made me much more aware of what I’m doing on the bike and made me think about why I’m doing it.” Rich, June 2016
- “Good value at £90 for tuition in a small group from 10:00 to 4:00pm. Whatever you think you know about MTB, if you’ve never had coaching before, give it a try, a really positive experience.” Diana, January 2017
- “I certainly didn’t expect to be rear wheel lifting and bunny hopping by the end of the day! The cornering skills I have taken away with me will change the way I ride forever. I was pretty chuffed to say the least.” Stuart, October 2016
The fundamentals of mountain biking aren’t mastered quickly. Learning perfect balance, movement and control around corners and over various terrain is something that you can still be learning many years after your first off-road ride. For this reason, no matter if you’re a rookie or a seasoned weekend warrior; we always recommend you ask us for the fundamentals.
This programme, its drills and techniques can be easily tailored to suit complete beginners or much more confident riders so that everyone can benefit from time with one of our most experienced coaches, Matt.
“In 8 years of coaching riders of all abilities, I always come back to coaching the fundamentals for much of my first session with a new rider, even if they tell me they’ve done the Mega Avalanche, can jump 20 feet or have a very expensive bike. In fact, I’m still working on my own fundamental skills after 20 years of riding experience” – Matt Legg-Bagg, coach
WHAT’S IN THE FUNDAMENTALS?
We’ll focus on a few key elements, looking at each in detail. We’ll start by checking our body position, not only focusing on the ‘how’ but the ‘why?’ Body position is the cornerstone to a great skill set on the mountain bike and a solid understanding is imperative in order to see development. A strong ‘ready position’ will set you up for success where a poor one will fail you. Once body position is understood and in action, we’ll take a look at the various wheel lifts; rear wheel lifts, bunny hops and manuals. These are useful skills that will not only help you navigate the trail but are also component parts of more complex skills, like jumping for example. The last element is cornering. How can we corner, off the brakes and with great control?
Once these skills are understood and utilised, you will experience less fatigue, more flow, more speed and more fun!
